Where Did Progressive Christianity Come From—and How Far Has It Spread?
Episode Description
Progressive Christianity didn't suddenly appear with today's debates over sexuality, gender, or politics. Its theological roots reach much further back.
We trace the development of progressive Christianity through theological liberalism, historical-critical approaches to Scripture, the Social Gospel, Modernist Christianity, and later reinterpretations of traditional Christian doctrine.
Then we let progressive Christianity speak for itself by examining the Eight Points of Progressive Christianity and influential voices including Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, John Shelby Spong, Brian McLaren, and Diana Butler Bass.
Finally, we ask a much bigger question: How many Christians have adopted individual beliefs associated with progressive Christianity without ever calling themselves progressive Christians?
We'll look at national polling concerning religious pluralism, sexuality, gender, abortion, Scripture, heaven, and hell to see how complicated the theological landscape inside American Christianity has become.
