FAITH:
We are exploring how God views courage and what it means to stand firm in faith when circumstances seem impossible. We will examine the biblical account of Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian servant who demonstrated extraordinary courage by standing up for the prophet Jeremiah when doing so meant risking his own safety and position. Through Jeremiah 38:4–6, 38:7–13, 39:15–16, and 37:17, we will explore how Ebed-Melech's actions demonstrated a willingness to stand for what was right, even when those in positions of authority stood against him. We will draw a parallel to Desmond Doss, the World War II Army medic who, guided by his faith and convictions, courageously risked his life to save others without carrying a weapon. Finally, we will bring these examples into our lives today, examining what biblical courage looks like in a world filled with fear, opposition, and uncertainty, and challenging ourselves to consider what God expects of us when our faith requires us to stand up, speak out, and do what is right, regardless of the consequences.
FAMILY:
1. How do Ebed-Melech and Desmond Doss demonstrate that biblical courage is not the absence of fear, but choosing to do what is right despite fear?
Jeremiah 38:7–13; Joshua 1:9; 2 Timothy 1:7
2. When standing for biblical truth could cost us our reputation, relationships, comfort, or even our safety, what evidence from Scripture shows that God values faithfulness over self-preservation?
Jeremiah 39:15–18; Acts 5:29; Matthew 10:28
3. What does courage look like for Christians today when we face overwhelming cultural pressure to remain silent or compromise our convictions—and how can we distinguish biblical courage from simply being confrontational?
Ephesians 6:10–14; 1 Peter 3:15–16; Colossians 4:5–6
